Grief and loss can make a person act out in all the worst kinds of ways. Madalynne Johnson has always been a bit of a handful, but with the loss of her brother, separation of her parents, and her boyfriends unexpected news of joining the army she has gone into a full on tailspin.

Parker Grant experienced loss firsthand when his brother took his own life. Darkness closed in. Madalynne saved him; showed him the light. And even though he isn’t sure what the future holds--he wants Madalynne and this time he won’t give up without a fight.

Let me start off with the fact that the premise of the story was a good one. I think the idea of high school first loves is a great one. After all pretty much everyone experiences first loves while in school and even a smaller few make it the long haul. The story has all the makings of what could be a really great story, but I don't feel like it was well executed. The author had great intentions, but I just think it was put together well. Perhaps if the author can get an editor to help rework the story a little to help with organization and grammar stuff it would be great.

All of that being said the story itself was decent. You meet Madalynn, she is a high school coping with loss and family turmoil. She is unsure of herself and what she wants out of life. Honestly, after finishing the story I still don't feel like I fully grasp what Mady is about other than her boyfriend. She spends all her time pushing him away, giving him mixed signals, and then goes back to not being able to function at all without him. While I know that she is in high school and kids at that age typically can't or won't see anything outside of high school. I almost feel like she was just a little selfish because she almost demanded guys to be pining over her. It was really hard for me to sympathize with her because I am a military wife and my hubby didn't get to come home after basic, he went straight to AIT. Just my 2 cents here :)

Then we meet Parker the love interest, the first love, and high school sweetheart. I sympathize a little more with him. I actually felt bad for him because he kept getting pushed away. But then I began to think him a bit of a weaker character because he pined after Mady even after various things that would have sent most high school boys running the other way. He then contemplates giving up his dreams to join the Army just to keep Mady happy and that is never a good way to start off a relationship. (hide spoiler)]

All in all it was an okay read for me. It could be made better by some reworking of various parts of the story.
